Design for Manufacturability/ Assembly (DFM/DFA)
3-Day Workshop

About the Program:

This workshop is designed for engineering and design professionals who want to be able to measure and improve the buildability of designs, alone or in teams. This course emphasizes the Design Quality index "DQI" method, which is intended for computer spreadsheet or handwritten analysis. The versions of DQI used focus on difficulty of manufacturing, difficulty of servicing and manual assembly time. After viewing a demonstration, the class will break into teams and analyze a design of their own choice.

Learning Objectives:

  • Discuss the effect of design on manufacturing & assembly
  • Explain the benefits of DFA/DFM
  • Discuss the history of DFA/DFM
  • Describe the sequence of application
  • Describe the demerit scale
  • Relate the demerit scale to the Taguchi loss function
  • Perform the steps to analyze an assembly with DFA
  • Assign demerits for handling
  • Assign demerits for inserting
  • Recognize and react to improvement opportunities
  • Discuss the serviceability (maintainability) version of DQI
  • Describe Design for Manufacturing DFM approaches
  • Describe how to develop guidelines and ratings for specific manufacturing processes
  • Perform an analysis of a manufactured component
  • Optional: Demonstration of the Boothroyd Dewhurst (BDI) method

Who Should Attend?

Anyone who might participate in a multifunctional team with a goal of improving buildability. This would include design professionals, engineers from process, quality, and reliability, and interested people from production.

Features & Benefits:

  • Reduced assembly time
  • Lower cost
  • Fewer mistakes in assembly
  • More reliable processes
  • Avoidance of unnecessary process steps
  • Better quality
